Greater Newport Chamber announces 2026 Excellence in Business Award Winners
The 20th Annual Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Business Awards were celebrated on the evening of April 8th at the Wyndham Newport Atlantic Resort. Winners were announced live at the awards dinner to the crowd of over 120 guests by co-emcees, Lee Merrill of Centreville Bank and Dr. Missy Varao of Salve Regina University.
This event, sponsored by Carey, Richmond & Viking Insurance, is hosted annually to honor outstanding business achievements, celebrate the successes of local businesses, and recognize the vital role they play in the economic well-being of the community.
Over 50 nominations were received and reviewed by a judging committee comprised of volunteers from the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Each category was narrowed down to three finalists who were invited to complete an application before the winners were chosen. The categories for the Excellence in Business Awards include Micro Business, Small Business, Big Business, Emerging Leader, Nonprofit, and Woman/Minority owned. The 2026 EIB winners are:
Big Business: Southcoast Health
Southcoast Health has long been a cornerstone of care and economic strength in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, delivering high-quality, compassionate healthcare while generating more than $2 billion in regional economic impact annually. With consistent recognition as a top hospital and a “Best Place to Work,” the organization pairs clinical excellence with a deep commitment to patient-centered care and innovation. In the past year alone, Southcoast has expanded services, invested in advanced facilities, and raised both its workforce and clinical capacity to meet rising community demand. Through significant community benefit investments and a mission-driven approach, Southcoast Health continues to elevate both the health and vitality of the Greater Newport community.
Small Business: A-1 Roofing & Construction
A-1 Roofing & Construction, led by Sean Napolitano, has built a reputation for excellence over more than two decades, combining superior craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology, and an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. In 2025, the company achieved remarkable growth, increasing revenue by 30%, expanding geographically across Rhode Island and into Massachusetts, and launching new service lines including a 300+ unit equipment rental division. A-1 delivers high-quality work across projects ranging from large-scale developments to detailed historic restorations. Beyond its business success, the company is deeply embedded in the community—supporting more than 20 organizations, donating roofs to those in need, and maintaining a strong volunteer presence.
Micro Business: Provence sur Mer
Provence Sur Mer has quickly become one of Newport’s most distinctive event venues, offering a uniquely elegant setting that blends historic charm with French-inspired design and a beautifully landscaped patio overlooking Newport’s Washington Square. Under Owner Karen Pinelli’s leadership, the business has demonstrated exceptional growth—doubling revenue in its second full year while expanding into specialty weddings and curated events. With a focus on exceptional guest experiences, meaningful partnerships, and thoughtful sustainability efforts, the business continues to elevate both the local events industry and the local community it serves.
Emerging Leader: Sugaring NYC-Aquidneck Island
Sugaring NYC has quickly become both a successful business and community connector. From sustainability-focused services to strong employee retention and deep local involvement, the business reflects a thoughtful and people-first approach to growth. Owner, Alexis Harvey, has emersed herself within the local business community through Chamber engagement, small business outreach and partnerships, community volunteering and local hiring.
Nonprofit: The James L. Maher Center
The James L Maher Center is a recognized leader in providing innovative, person-centered services for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, continually expanding opportunities that promote independence, dignity, and community inclusion. Over the past year, the organization has achieved remarkable growth, increasing its program offerings by approximately 40% while expanding services and opening a new regional hub to improve accessibility. Through initiatives like the “Health Matters” wellness program and enhanced career services, the Center is empowering individuals to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Its strong partnerships with local businesses and community organizations further amplify its impact, creating meaningful employment pathways and fostering a more inclusive community. With a deep commitment to innovation, accessibility, and community engagement, the Maher Center continues to set the standard for excellence in the non-profit sector.
Woman/Minority Owned: Ward’s Manufacturing
Ward’s Manufacturing is a powerful example of what it means to break barriers and redefine expectations. Co-founded by Kelly Ward and her brother, Kiffin Ward, the company has quickly established itself in the highly technical ocean tech and defense manufacturing space – an industry where women-owned businesses remain incredibly rare. In just a few short years, they’ve built not only a successful company, but a respected name grounded in innovation, precision, and trust. Kelly represents a new generation of leadership—collaborative, forward-thinking, and unafraid to step into spaces where representation has historically been limited. Her active involvement in the Chamber and industry events reflects a commitment not just to growth, but to community and connection. Ward’s Manufacturing is not only succeeding – but they are also paving the way for others to follow.
“It was such a pleasure to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Excellence in Business Awards with so many accomplished and inspiring businesses. Excellence isn’t just about a moment – it’s a legacy – and we are so honored to be a part of these businesses’ journeys” says Erin Donovan-Boyle, President & CEO of the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce.
