    Organizational Background

    newportFILM, a year-round, nonprofit documentary film series, screens approximately 30 films annually, with its summer outdoors series alone attracting over 20,000 people from June through September. During the summer months, newportFILM produces free, public screening events at iconic outdoor locations in Newport and Aquickneck Island. Featuring filmmaker conversations, live music and community partnerships, newportFILM has become an important cultural anchor in the state of Rhode Island since its founding in 2010. 

    In the off-season, newportFILM screens impactful documentaries both virtually and in-person at various locations within Newport and Rhode Island. Leveraging strong local partnerships, newportFILM centers documentary film as a means to build and amplify community engagement. With its edu program, newportFILM hosts environmental screening events for middle students and facilitates a youth-powered, community-driven documentary film learning lab at the Florence Gray Center for high school aged students. For emerging filmmakers, newportFILM hosts a nationally recognized, annual cinematography lab to mentor and launch promising talent into the field of nonfiction visual storytelling.

    Role

    This position will report to the Director of Operations and will work with hired technical engineer(s) on event production at all newportFILM events with a focus on setting up, operating and breaking down all technical equipment. The Production Assistant will also assist in equipment maintenance and upkeep after events. 

    Responsibilities

    EVENT PRODUCTION & EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE

    Event Technologies & Production

    • Hands-on technical event production, including setting up, operating and breaking down professional audio, video, electrical, and lighting equipment 
    • Communicating clearly with Director of Operations and Technical Engineer during setup and during event; helping troubleshoot any technical issues and assisting during pre-event technical tests
    • Assisting with video broadcasting and live video recording 
    • Assist with pre-event tasks, including venue site visits, creating run of shows, testing media files and organizing production vehicles
    • Setting up and producing special events and fundraisers, including the annual summer fundraiser and Cinematography Lab

    Equipment Management & Maintenance

    • Stage management for live events, including setting up live music performances, on stage interviews, recorded interviews
    • Breaking down and properly storing all technical cables for events, including audio, video, electrical and fiber optic cables
    • Post-Event technical equipment maintenance, cleaning, organization and repair at newportFILM storage unit
    • Assisting with the loading and unloading of event and technical equipment at events and post-event at newportFILM storage unit

    Competencies & Skills

    • The Ideal Candidate works well in a team setting, thrives in a fast-paced work environment and is comfortable working large scale events or has experience working large scale events. 
    • Audio Engineering or experience with professional audio mixing boards; experience working with PreSonus Audio equipment
    • Experience setting up and operating large PA speaker systems
    • Training and experience in cable management; ability to safely setup and breakdown a variety of technical cables
    • Knowledge and experience using various video equipment, including Video switchers, professional video playback software, fiber optic video cable, and projectors and projector screens
    • Strong computer skills on both Apple and PC, with experience in Adobe Premiere and video editing software, professional DAW recording software, Adobe Photoshop, Roland Video Equipment,  large file management and video playback software
    • Knowledge and experience running Crestron Systems or other venue management systems 

    Requirements, Dates and Hours

    Hours are flexible from March to May, the ideal candidate can work evenings and some weekends for events and is available for 1 office work day per week. Thursdays from June to September are required work days. This position requires outdoors day and evening work
