    Full Job Description

    The Newport Yacht Club, in Newport, RI, seeks an experienced individual to fill the position of General Manager to replace the outgoing, retiring General Manager. The Newport Yacht Club is a year-round private club with over 800 members. The facilities include a 60 slip marina open to members and transients, launch service, parking, event space, lounge/bar with food and beverage service, kitchen, junior sailing space, and workshop space. The Club has very strong ties to the City of Newport and the maritime community.

    The General Manager is responsible for the overall operations of the yacht club, ensuring the smooth functioning of the club for members and guests. This includes, but is not limited to, overseeing staff responsible for the management of facilities, food and beverage operations, marina operations, member engagement, and events hosting. The ideal candidate will have professional management and leadership experience, including hiring, training, and supervising staff. Experience in private club or yacht club management; operations in food and beverage, marina, or in the marine industry is a plus. The ideal candidate fosters a positive and inclusive atmosphere while promoting the traditions of a yacht club including the nautical customs, traditions, flag etiquette and protocols. Holding a USCG license is preferred but not required.

    Newport Yacht Club is looking for a long-term fit, as the general manager position is a bridge to building and maintaining relationships with the local community, including harbor management and the maritime community. The general manager will work closely with the board or directors, committee members, and volunteers to carry out the club’s goals and provide guidance where required.

    Qualifications:

    Preferred Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree or applicable experience.
    • Marina operations.
    • Private club management and culture.
    • Hospitality industry including Food and Beverage Operations.
    • Managing Club events, functions and fully licensed food and liquor operations.
    • Project planning and implementation.
    • Facilities management and maintenance.
    • Private club financial management, including budgeting and office oversight.
    • Management of a diverse staff, including hiring, supervision, and evaluation.
    • Customer-centric orientation and ability to work with both internal (Flag Officers, board members, committee members, staff) and external (local and state governments, the marine industry, the sailing community) constituencies.
    • Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
    • Technology skills including the use of POS systems

    Responsibilities:

    General

    • Actively fosters positive culture among membership by developing an ongoing dialogue and rapport with club members through recognition, communication, and follow-through.
    • On-site manager that invests appropriate amounts of time and commitment to the Newport Yacht Club.
    • Under the direction of the Commodore and in coordination with the committee chairs, implements, directs, and executes general policies/procedures as established by the Board of Directors.
    • When requested or when the need arises, actively participates with various committees to help facilitate planning, implementation, and eventual closure of various projects and/or activities sponsored by the Newport Yacht Club.
    • Oversee and maintain the quality of operations throughout the club departments and suggest improvements and upgrades as appropriate
    • Completes to the best of his/her ability any other additional responsibility that may be assigned to the General Manager either by written word or verbal direction as dictated by the Commodore of the Newport Yacht Club and/or his/her designee in coordination with the appropriate committee chairs.

    Financial and Reporting

    • Implements, monitors, and maintains line-item integrity of the general budget and the budgetary process.
    • At routine intervals prepare and compose a “Activity Brief” to serve as a bulleted update for the Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore and Board of Directors.
    • Provides management and oversight for all Club monies including sales from lounge, clothing, special events, and club invoicing.
    • Ability to run payroll if required.
    • Ability to maintain a purchasing and Inventory system.
    • Keep Regulatory licenses maintained and up to date.

    Personnel

    • With input and collaboration from the Commodore and in coordination with the appropriate committee chairs, the General Manager is directly responsible for the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of all full and part time club employees including the Office Administrator, Dock Master, Dock Hands, Launch Drivers, Bar Staff, Chef, Kitchen Staff, Security Personnel, and Support Staff.
    • Facilitates, encourages, and nurtures a positive working relationship with all employees and committee members.
    • Serves as the single point relations between staff and members concerning staff job requirements and performance and provides resolution and follow up on member feedback.
    • Maintains and enforces nondiscriminatory policy for the Newport Yacht Club with staff with respect to hiring, supervising, and evaluating performance. This procedure will also include those steps related to staff termination.

    Facilities and Marina operations

    • Provides advice and recommendations to the Board of Directors and Committee Chairs in the areas of construction, alterations, maintenance, supplies, equipment, and services of the Club.
    • Upholds customs and traditions including flag etiquette and other yacht club protocols.
    • Work with dock master and float and dock committee to streamline marina operations which prioritize member vessels but also maximizes revenue from transient vessels.
    • Follow, update and create building and other facilities maintenance schedules.
    • Maintains and renews all necessary licenses as appropriate for the optimal operation of the Club including the Club’s launch’s USCG Certificate for Passengers and appropriate staff certification in First Aid/CPR/AED and TIPS.
    • Maintains all safe combinations and safe-deposit accounts.
    • Maintains all keys to the club facility and lockers.
    • Manage approved facility improvement projects within a set budget
