    The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment for the Norman Bird Sanctuary’s 325-acre campus:

     Clean, disinfect, and sanitize restrooms using established practices and procedures.
     Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Inventory supplies.
     Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, and vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
     Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, and programs. Maintain the facility to current CDC and R.I. Department of Health sanitizing standards.
     Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools: buffers, vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, work surfaces, walls, carpets, furniture, etc. Wash walls and equipment.
     Secure assigned buildings: check for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
     Perform cleaning and related activities such as snow and debris removal from sidewalks, stairs, and other public areas within sixteen feet of buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
     Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
     Wash accessible interior and exterior windows. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops. Have essential physical and mental capabilities in the following: Interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, follow directions, comprehension, calculating, reading, writing, speaking, evaluating, mathematics, organizing and innovation, hearing.
     The ability to work in all weather conditions, lift up to 40 pounds, push and pull heavy objects and climb ladders is required.
     Attend to emergencies when necessary.
     Handle trash and recycling materials. Other duties as assigned.
     Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisor, fellow staff members, volunteers, and the general public.

    Qualifications:
     High school diploma or GED required.
     Must have a minimum of two years of experience.
     Must have working knowledge of facilities operations and equipment.
     Must be neat in work appearance.
     Must be able to lift and carry 70 pounds.
     Must pass a background check.
     This position involves bending, reaching, ascending and descending ladders and stairs, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, and pushing.
     This position requires knowledge of different cleaning products and tools, time-management and multitasking abilities, physical strength and stamina, organization skills, attention to detail, good verbal communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work with minimal supervision.
    Hours, Compensation, and Benefits
    20 hours per week (8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday)
    $13.00 per hour
    This is a non-exempt, hourly paid position with an immediate start date.
    This position does not include benefits.
