    2021 Coastal Queen Cruises – Deckhand / Narrator Job Description

    • Takes direction from the Ferry Captain of the Day & Ferry Manager.
    • Must be able to perform coast guard drills (i.e., fire drill, man overboard drill, etc.)
    • Must be TIPs certified
    • Deckhands will step in behind the bar when there is a need. The deckhand will assist the bartender with making drinks, and ringing customers out through the iPad onboard.
    • The deckhand will also be responsible for assisting the bartender with stocking supplies throughout the day.
    • Deckhands will have a daily checklist that they will be required to follow throughout the day.
    • Cash Management Skills required
    • Deckhand should have a general understanding of the engine room onboard and how to start the vessels' engines and generator.
    • Deckhands must be clean-shaven and presentable when arriving for their shift. Proper dress code is required; Closed-toed shoes, Coastal Queen Cruises shirt, khaki pants/shorts. If there is an event, white Coastal Queen Shirts are required.
    • The deckhand will be responsible for checking customers in upon boarding on the Fare Harbor iPad. Assist customers with getting onboard safely. Safety is our top priority!
    • Responsible for reporting passenger counts to the captain each time the vessel departs the dock. Also, report to Bartender to be put into the iPad.
    • Greet all customers with a smile as they are boarding the vessel.
    • While underway, circulate the entire vessel 2 – 3 times per cruise asking, “Can I get you anything?” “May I take any trash?” & answer customers' questions. Customers may request a drink from the bar, it is your duty to get their drinks and collect proper payment. Always be sure to follow your TIPs certification guidelines for checking valid ID’s. Check-in with the captain periodically throughout the cruise.
    • Deckhands will also be responsible for the presentation of the vessel. Be sure that the bathrooms are sparkling clean and stocked, no-slip or trip hazards, clean up spills and messes along the way.
    • Always be aware of their surroundings, be sure that children/passengers are not hanging over the side rails. Be on the lookout for kayaks, lobster pots, paddle boarders, other vessels, and such. Report to the captain if they are unable to see the object.
    • Narration skills and customer service skills are required
    • History background of Newport Harbor, Narragansett Bay, area lighthouses, forts, and the Jamestown Shoreline is a plus!
    • Nights of special events, deckhands will be required to remove benches indicated by the charter/event manager and prepare the vessel for the event.
    • Responsible for the cleanliness of the boat (i.e., cleaning the deck, collecting trash onboard the boat, making sure that the head is clean, taking trash to the dumpster as needed).
    • Use of cellphones onboard is prohibited unless being used for a work-related purpose.
    • Smoking on board the vessel of any kind including e-cigarettes and vapor is prohibited.
    • Deckhands should check online reviews frequently to see how we are doing.

    2021 Jamestown Newport Ferry – Deckhand Job Description

    • Takes direction from the Ferry Captain and Ferry Manager.
    • Must be able to perform Coast Guard Drills (i.e. Man overboard, fire drill, fire at sea).
    • Must be TIPs certified.
    • The deckhand will have a daily checklist to follow:
    • Scrub decks, stock or re-stock cooler, general cleanliness of the vessel, clean / restock onboard head.
    • The deckhand will be responsible for the safety of the passengers. Watch for slip and trip hazards
    • The deckhand will welcome all passengers on board with a smile. Make sure that the boat is close to the dock. Safety is our top priority! Be sure that children are seated and supervised while onboard. Do not allow anyone to hang over the side rails.
    • Must be able to operate onboard POS Ticketing System (Sell tickets, drinks, etc.)
    • Cash Management Skills required.
    • The deckhand will report passenger count to the Captain and fill in on the daily run sheet.
    • Once onboard, the deckhand will circulate the vessel to scan tickets and engage with customers. The deckhand should check to see if any passengers will be getting off at Rose Island, if so check to be sure the passengers have Rose Island Landing Fee Tickets. (Collect landing fee tickets upon arrival to Rose Island).
    • “Can I get you anything to drink” – “Do you need a map of Newport or Jamestown” – Do you have a schedule with our departure times?
    • At each stop, the deckhand will follow the captain’s directions for tying the vessel up safely. Passengers must be able to easily step off of the boat. Deckhand should understand how to use handicapped ramp if necessary.
    • Deckhand should have a general understanding of things-to-do / places to eat at each stop.
    • Deckhand to check for passengers at each stop. There are times where the passengers will congregate at the top of the gangway.
    • Deckhand should always be presentable. (Clean shaven, Jamestown Newport Ferry Polo, Khaki shorts or pants, closed-toed shoes).
    • Deckhand must have excellent customer service skills.
    • Deckhands should be familiar with the area. Passengers often times will ask about Rose Island, Clingstone, Fort Adams, Hammersmith Farm. Have a general understanding of points of interest and be able to point them out.

    Job Type: Part-time

    Pay: $10.50 - $11.00 per hour
