    McKee signs $13B budget; could still extend state of emergency

    Gov. Dan McKee Tuesday signed Rhode Island's new, and record-setting, $13.1 billion state budget into law.

    Surrounded by lawmakers on the south steps of the State House, McKee called the tax and spending plan for the year that began last Thursday central to "help Rhode Island meet this crucial moment in our pandemic recovery."

    The budget -- including a $14.3 billion rewrite of last year's budget -- represents a new high-water mark in total state spending, much of it coming from federal COVID aid.
