Design Week RI (organized by DESIGNxRI)

We’re excited to be part of Design Week RI with DESIGNxRI this year! It’s the 8th annual week of celebrating and showcasing the latest in design in Rhode Island. 

Monday, September 27th will have a specialized focus on design in Newport. 

Innovate Newport is proud to host two events on this day. 
 

9:30-11:30 a.m. Crossing the Pell Presentation and Exhibit Preview 

Crossing the Pell is both a design exhibit and an interactive experience.

The construction of the Pell Bridge in 1969 changed the economy of this region through the introduction of automobile access. The ease of crossing the bay has since made Newport a travel destination, famed for its architectural heritage, beaches, cultural and sailing events. More than half a century later, the consideration of adapting this iconic bridge for cycle and pedestrian access was inspired by two Senate bills from 2019: the Bridge Investment Act and the IMAGINE Act. Four visions for both updating/upgrading RI’s infrastructure and for using innovative materials and techniques for domestic infrastructural work are at the heart of this exhibition. In addition, the extreme demographics within the city of Newport inspired social agenda embedded within the design for pedestrian and bicycle access.  

In the full exhibit, coming to Innovate Newport in the late Fall of 2021, four proposals from the MA in Adaptive Reuse program of RISD’s Department of Interior Architecture will be presented through immersive experience, utilizing visualization technology in an exhibition setting to take the visitor across the bridge.  

On Monday, September 27th, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from the leaders of the project as well as experience an interactive virtual reality walk across the bridge. 

2-5 p.m.  3-D Printing Workshop presented by Aquidneck Fabrication. 

You are invited to experience the emerging world of 3D printing! At this event attendees have the opportunity to try 3D printing. The team at Aquidneck Fabrication will walk you through the process of roughly designing and printing a 3D piece. There will also be a presentation of how they use computer aided design to transfer ideas into reality across the architecture, yacht and prototyping industries.

Start Up Week RI (organized by RIHub) 

Oct. 18 – 22 

Friday, October 22 will have a specialized focus in Newport. 

Innovate Newport is proud to participate in Start Up Week RI in a variety of ways. 
 

Monday- Friday; 8:30-10 a.m. Pop Up Foodies 

Entrepreneurs in the food industry will share their start-up stories and offer samplings of their products. Specific line up of entrepreneurs to be shared in the near future.

Friday, 2-4 p.m. Newport Start Up Showcase  

The Startup Showcase celebrates and showcases what’s next in Newport’s startup ecosystem and is open to early and later stage companies from all industries.
